Four Eyes Tribute Update

Hey everyone! Sorry I haven't been as on it as last time, but I assure you the Four Eyes tribute is still happening! If you called a song, please email me and confirm you're still doing the track you called if you haven't already. I'm looking at you David L and Spaceboy, since I don't know you guys in real life!

Also, the due date has been extended to June 7th.

Have fun dudes and dudettes!

The Next Comp: A Tribute to the Four Eyes!!!

It’s time for another comp!

I originally thought I would limit this compilation thing to one project a year. But, I had so much fun with last year’s A Christmas Comp For You! that I couldn’t wait a whole year to get started on something else. So I am pleased to announce Domestic Honey’s next release…

A Tribute to The Four Eyes

Why am I doing this? The answer is simple: to make a ton of money. When all the Four Eyes fans of the world hear there’s a limited run cassette full of Sacramento locals covering the Four Eyes songs, they will be clamoring to send me their money.

Also, the Four Eyes are one of my favorite bands. They write super catchy songs, they’re really funny, and they’re nice dudes.

Look, if I have to explain to you why putting out a Four Eyes tribute compilation on a cassette is the best idea I’ve ever had, you probably don’t want to contribute anyways.

But I do want you to contribute!

Of course, there’s a bunch of boring guidelines you need to follow, and some other important information you need to read. I was worried about this stuff last time, but it all worked out pretty good, so we’re going to do a lot of things the same. If you’re interested in contributing a Four Eyes cover to the compilation, please read on...

  1. This is a tribute to the Four Eyes. That means you get to record a cover of a Four Eyes song, send it to me, and I’ll put it on a very professionally manufactured cassette tape. No original songs, even if they’re about the Four Eyes or something nerdy, will be considered. Of course, the Four Eyes are known for playing hours upon hours of cover songs. It goes without saying that covers of covers won’t be considered either, no matter how Four Eyes-ish you make them. If for some reason you don’t have the complete Four Eyes discography, a lot of their music is available for free on their website. The lyrics are printed on the inserts of some of their releases, but I bet if you have questions one of the Four Eyes will help you out, if they even know.
  2. You won’t be financially compensated for your contribution. Like the Christmas comp, I will provide you with enough tapes, free of charge, for each contributor to your track to have one. If you employ the services of an orchestra or gospel choir we might have a problem, but otherwise everyone should get a tape. You will also be able to purchase as many tapes as you need at cost, meaning at the price I pay per tape. Then I don’t lose as much money, and you can have all the tapes you want for a really low cost. You can then do with those tapes as you see fit. I’ll give the Four Eyes some tapes to sell, and I’ll try and sell a few myself to make enough to put out another tape some time. The bottom line is I’m not doing this to make money (despite the hilarious joke I made above), but if I lose too much money I won’t be able to continue doing projects like this in the future.
  3. Calling it. Ugh. The Halloween Show has given me enough “calling it” anxiety to never want to worry about people “calling it” again. So I’m going to try and let everyone police themselves. But here’s some things to keep in mind:
  • Don’t be a dick. As with all things in life, don’t be a jerk to other people. If you know someone has their heart on doing a particular song, maybe pick another one. There’s so many great Four Eyes songs! Also don’t call a song and then not do it.
  • Don’t let your feelings get hurt. If someone is doing the song you really want to do, they’re probably not doing it just to be a dick. Besides, there’s so many great Four Eyes songs!
  • I might accept more than one version of a song, if I have to. I don’t want to put out a cassette with 20 different versions of Calculator Man, but if two people send me submissions of the same song, and they’re both great, they might both make the tape. Or, I might pick and choose. Seriosuly, I’ll do it! But please don’t make me do it!
  • I think my band is recording The Oldest Dude in the world, so don’t be a dick and call it or my feelings will be hurt.
  • Ben Casey. You don’t get to call all of the Ben Casey Saga. If you want to do Ben Casey, just pick one part. Unless you collaborate with a ton of people, We Are The World style.
Feel free to make known the song you plan on covering. Preferably in the comments section below, or by letting me know via email, text, Facebook, or whatever. I’ll try and keep a running list, and if someone calls something that’s already been called, I’ll let them know someone else has also called it, and they can figure out the best way to handle things (probably picking a different song, but who knows?) Consideration may also be given to the first submission, the cooler person, the better friend, or the person who buys me the best burrito. What I’m saying is there’s no hard fast rule here, and I’m not going to worry about making everyone feel all warm and fuzzy and that we live in a fair world where everyone gets to record Jackpot and they’re entitled to participate on their own terms. I’m doing this for fun, and if you take the fun out of it, you’re blowing it for me and yourself.
  1. All submissions are due by Sunday, June 1st, 2015 at 11:59 PM! You can email or dropbox a digital version of your song to me. If you don’t have my contact information, reply in the comments below with the best way to get ahold of you I’ll contact you. You can also give me a CD/Thumbdrive/Cassette in person or through the mail. Again, let me know in the comments if you need to get a hold of me.
  • I don’t have any real preference in format, just do whatever you’re used to and sounds good to you and we’ll make it work.
  • I’m enlisting a little help with “mastering” to clean up the tracks and level things off so volume doesn’t vary too much from track to track.
  • Once your track is submitted I’ll ask you for credits/liner note information, and continue to keep you updated on the details of the release.
  • With any luck the cassette will be released some time in July. I’ll plan a release show when I have a better idea of when it will be finished.

I think that’s it. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. If I forgot anything I’ll update this here blog and probably post on Facebook too. Have fun and be creative, folks!

Christmas Time!

I've wanted to do this for a long time, and I've decided this is the year I actually do it. I'm putting out a Christmas compilation, and I want all my friends to be on it.

Let me back up a little. I know it's kind of weird, but I like Christmas music. A lot of it, anyways. It might be because from a young age I associated it with things like making decorations out of construction paper, being out of school, eating cookies, drinking hot chocolate out of a santa mug, and getting presents. It might have more to do with them feeling fleetingly special, like that big warm coat you only get to wear when it's really cold.

Of course, if you've ever worked in retail, or any business open to the public during the Holiday season, you've probably grown sick of the same old songs. I've been there too.  So let's make a bunch of music that no one is sick of yet.

So here's the deal. Hans from Pleasant Screams has agreed to work with me to put out a cassette. It seems important to me to put it out in some kind of physical form, not just a download. Probably because I want to be able to gift wrap it and give it everyone as a present. Vinyl is too expensive and takes too long. And I'll be honest and say I just don't want to put out a CD. We'll figure out a way to make it downloadable too.

Now, on to the fun stuff/important stuff:

1. Pretty much anything goes. Originals are strongly encouraged. Putting out a comp with all original songs would be amazing. But, time is limited, and there's a billion good songs out there already, so traditional and cover songs will also be great. Oh and of course! You don't have to do a song about the "Christian" Christmas. Winter, Hanukkah, Solstice, Kwanzaa - if it takes place in December, it's probably good. Sing about Santa. Sing about a snowman or a reindeer. Sing about Krampus. Maybe don't sing about Black Peter, though.

2. This is a tape that will be cheap or free (see below) so fidelity does not need to be your number one concern. We will try and level everything out so it all sounds good together on the tape. But don't be a nerd about it. Record on your computer, record on a boom box, or I guess go ahead and book some studio time and turn in something totally pro. The point is, this is for fun so have fun with it. We all know more than a few folks who are pretty good at home recording, so if you can't manage it yourself, ask a pal. Or if you're one of those folks who likes recording others, and you have some time, maybe volunteer.

3. Back to the free thing. Tapes seems to be pretty cheap to put out. Unless there's some hidden fees I'm missing, I'll probably pay for this whole thing myself and give them out for free. I'm not in any bands, and putting out physical copies of things is something I've always wanted to do, so I'm willing to pay for it just to say I did it. If I'm wrong and it ends up costing more than I thought, I might accept donations. If it really gets out of hand I guess I might sell some to cover the cost. I don't think that will happen. I also have to work this out with Hans. Basically what I'm saying is I don't think the bands are getting any money, but they will get at least one copy per member, or maybe more depending on how many songs we get and how many tapes we end up making. It won't be a lot.

4. If you're planning on doing a traditional song or a cover, let me know, so bands don't end up doubling up. Though I guess if there's more than one band/person that really want to do the same song I'll let whoever submits the song first have it. I don't want someone to call it and then not follow through. If for some reason there's more than one version of a song, I guess I'll hold onto it and hope for a volume 2.

5. You don't have to be in an existing band to record and submit.  I'd love to have songs from all my favorite bands in town, but I know it can be hard to figure out schedules to write and record sometimes. So record something yourself under your own name, or put together a band just for one song, or whatever. The more the merrier.

6. I want to fill this thing with good music, but try and keep it to one song per band. That doesn't neccesarily mean one song per person, though.

7. In order to make sure we have enough time for duplication by the holiday season, all songs have to be complete and SUBMITTED by October 31st, 2014. I know it's probably hard to get in the winter frame of mind when it's 100 degrees out. Just pump the AC and burn a pine-scented candle and you should be good to go.
